Kayaking in Georgia…

Now that I finally have a minute to myself to write a quick post, I want to share with you all a few photos from our weekend. My husband has basically held his laptop, captive so I will write this quick before he needs it back!

We’ve been in Georgia for about a month now, and have been using up our free time to do lots of exploring. My husband took up fishing years ago, but really got into it when we were living in Oklahoma. Now, that’s all he wants to do, which is great… never bad to have a hobby, and he doesn’t let it consume most of his free time, so I can live that. In fact, I enjoy going along with him… sometimes, depending on the day and my mood, ha. Recently, we had scoped out a few lakes around our town where he could go fishing. He got his fishing license, here, so we went out a few weekends ago, brought our dog, and ventured out to the lakes.

After an unsuccessful day of fishing, my husband thought that maybe he’d have better luck if he had a kayak to take out on the lake, while fishing. Maybe he’d catch more fish if he was really out there and in the middle of the water. J’s always been talking about getting a kayak but has never been able to pull the trigger on actually buying one. So, this past weekend, we set out to find one, although, I didn’t think he’d actually buy one, this time, but he did! Nothing super fancy, but good enough to enable him to get out on the water, relax, and fish, with it. We only bought one, for the time being, but I still enjoyed getting outside and keeping him company. I mean, someone had to document his first time out on the lake with his new kayak! Not to mention, our dog LOVES being outside… what dog doesn’t? So, I walked him through a few trails around the lake.

It stormed for quite a few days, here in the south. Lots of tornadoes, rain, flooding, and high-speed winds. Fortunately, none of that hit close to home, other that a lot of rain. Sunday, cleared up a bit. It stayed cloudy most of the day, but it was nice enough to make a quick trip out onto the lake, which was great. J was especially excited since he was more than ready to take his new toy out for a spin!

After looking at countless kayaks, my husband decided he didn’t want anything over the top, something simple, and something to get the job done. Since he’s not doing any speed racing or sea kayaking, he found the perfect kayak for him to just sit in and fish. He found this one , at Wal-Mart for a decent price. It’s a Sun Dolphin Journey 10′ sit-on fishing kayak. It came with a paddle, which was great. Any other accessories, such as an anchor, extra padded seating, life jacket, etc, you have to purchase separately. I’d say, it really all depends on what you’re looking for in a kayak; everyone is different. You definitely have to take into consideration what you are going to be using it for and your height. If you do kayaking as a sport, you may want to spring for something higher tech. Of course, I am not expert in the kayak area, so this is my personal opinion. He loves this one, though, especially since it’s designed for kayak fishing. Of course, you don’t necessarily have to fish when using it. I haven’t taken it out yet, myself, but that’s on the agenda for this upcoming weekend!
